The year 2006 was filled with many remarkable accomplishments for Outlaw Productions and the hip hop scene in Bahrain and the Gulf region.
Outlaw Productions had devoted all the energy to achieve many of its main goals. Our efforts to dig for young genuine talents lead to successful outcomes. We discovered a number of extraordinary talents in music, vocals, dance and art. The efforts still continue to enhance these talents and direct them towards producing works of art that are of high cultural quality.
We at Outlaw Productions realize that youth today face many challenges, with the increase of the influence of media and the internet. Our youth are being misled by the media to lead a life of materialism, and violence. We are determined to fight this degradation of the intelligence of the youth through media by focusing on what is known to be the fifth element of hip hop – "Knowledge"; and transcend the culture of youth to participate in resulting in a generation that is conscious and responsible.
Another one of our main aims is to change the misconceptions people have about hip hop culture and help promote the recognition and understanding that hip hop is a conscious, revolutionary cultural movement and lifestyle that means to spread hope for a better, more dignified future.
Our projects in 2006, has had these as the base of our work and the main goals we move towards achieving.
An important turning point during the past year was our cooperation with Al-Ghadeer Hotel Management Company, by the launching of Outlaw Productions as an official events management company, a division of the mother company Al-Ghadeer Hotel Management Company. This will make it easier for us to work at an official level, and licenses us to organize proffessional concerts through getting international artists to perform.
In February, Outlaw Productions organized for "The Peace Through Hip Hop" event which was sponsored by the US embassy and the Ministry of Information; and featured performances by the renowned Opus Akoben from Washington DC, Army of One from Kuwait and Outlaw Productions artists.
As part of our mission to enhance and strengthen the true hip hop culture among our youth, Outlaw productions took the initiative to organize the first "History of Hip Hop month" celebration in Bahrain and the region. This celebration, which took place on November 17th, was under the name "Bring It On". It was the first old school celebration in the country and it featured the first breakdance battle among many local and regional breakdancing crews, in addition to live performances by Opus Akoben (who decided to visit a second time) and local artists under the label. This event was an attempt to bring those youngsters who had been breakdancing on the streets the recognition they deserve and bring hip hop talents under the spotlight.
Throughout the year Outlaw Productions played a vital role in the upliftment of the hip hop scene in Bahrain by organizing and participating actively in various hip hop events and programs. One of those programs was the Youth outreach program introduced by the U.S. embassy which constituted of seminars and workshops by Opus Akoben in various schools and universities all over the country. Being a part of this program gave us the opportunity to reach many students and enlighten them more about the true hip hop culture and the history of the movement; and also interact with them to exchange thoughts and experiences.
Many local (public and private) parties, carnivals and events were brought to life by DJ Outlaw and the artists under the label. Outlaw Productions were also covered all over the media and were featured in many publications.
In addition to that we have also been able to strengthen ties with many hip hop activists worldwide and leave a mark and name for Bahraini hip hop on the International hip hop scene.
We are still currently working on many diverse projects for 2007 that are guaranteed to maintain and heighten the Bahraini hip hop movement locally and internationally. Our new album "History in the Making" is just one of those numerous projects and it will be out by early 2007 as we promised! The rest, we prefer to leave as a surprise. So stay tuned for further updates!
